In today's increasingly internet-oriented economy, computer literacy is a crucial, highly-marketable skill that can be of great value to our marginalized population.

As a result of a substantial donation from an individual in the United Kingdom, Mercy Foundation International has been able to purchase 20 computers for the purpose of setting up an IT suite that will be completed by July 20th, 2006. These online desktops, centrally located in downtown Takoradi, will be available from morning until late evening and will further the education of the agency's children. Through frequent use of these PCs, students will gain familiarity with email, web browsing, digital photography, communication with the outside world (through Skype and the 8 included web cameras), and website publication, as well as word-processing and general computer use. Their constant connectivity means students can learn to search not only for educational material, but also for their own hobbies and interests, be it football scores or online chess. Older, vocational students will be able to use the internet to supplement their job training. For instance, an apprentice mechanic can access detailed car repair manuals which would otherwise be too expensive or unavailable.

The additional gift of a durable digital camera and Flickr Pro site will enable people from around the world to see our progress, starting in late July, 2006.
